Overview
Scarborough Women's Centre empowers marginalized and at-risk women to achieve economic and emotional independence. As a One-to-One Mentor & Tutor, you will commit to a sustained relationship with a woman working toward specific personal learning goals — whether navigating a life transition, building literacy, or developing English conversation skills. This is one of the most personal and impactful ways to serve, requiring consistency, empathy, and a long-term commitment.
Primary Duties
Meet regularly with a woman to work toward her specific learning goals.
Provide mentoring support for women navigating major life transitions.
Offer literacy or English conversation tutoring based on the individual's needs.
Provide general supportive mentoring, encouraging growth in confidence and independence.
Maintain communication with the Coordinator of Volunteers and attend any required check-ins.
Qualifications
Patient, empathetic, and reliable with a heart for women facing systemic barriers.
Experience in tutoring, mentoring, counseling, or social services is an asset but not required.
Volunteer Requirements
Ability to commit to regular meetings over 6 to 12 months.
Completion of the mandatory 20-hour Direct Service Volunteer Training (suggested fee of $35; subsidies available).
