Overview

Scarborough Women's Centre empowers marginalized and at-risk women to achieve economic and emotional independence. As a One-to-One Mentor & Tutor, you will commit to a sustained relationship with a woman working toward specific personal learning goals — whether navigating a life transition, building literacy, or developing English conversation skills. This is one of the most personal and impactful ways to serve, requiring consistency, empathy, and a long-term commitment.

Primary Duties

  • Meet regularly with a woman to work toward her specific learning goals.

  • Provide mentoring support for women navigating major life transitions.

  • Offer literacy or English conversation tutoring based on the individual's needs.

  • Provide general supportive mentoring, encouraging growth in confidence and independence.

  • Maintain communication with the Coordinator of Volunteers and attend any required check-ins.

Qualifications

  • Patient, empathetic, and reliable with a heart for women facing systemic barriers.

  • Experience in tutoring, mentoring, counseling, or social services is an asset but not required.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Ability to commit to regular meetings over 6 to 12 months.

  • Completion of the mandatory 20-hour Direct Service Volunteer Training (suggested fee of $35; subsidies available). A TPS police check is required. GBF & SWC will guide you on the application process.

  • Training is held once a year. The next one is held in January 2027. Applications for 2027 are due by October 31, 2026.
