Overview
House Coordinators live and work in community with refugee claimant families at Romero House, part of a unique model where staff live in the same homes as the families they support. Grounded in the belief that everyone deserves dignity, welcome, and belonging, the role combines practical support with building a community of hospitality. It may be a fit for those who value community, service, and relationship-building. Romero House is recruiting new House Coordinators for September 2026, with decisions made in June/July 2026.
Primary Duties
Respond to basic maintenance needs, help care for shared spaces (chores system, garbage, seasonal upkeep), and support unit turnover and contractor access
Support fire safety, building security, and emergency preparedness; participate in an on-call rotation and respond to urgent situations, such as accompanying someone to the hospital
Welcome and orient new families, foster a respectful and cooperative living environment, and refer residents to appropriate Romero House support for immigration or settlement needs
Build relationships with residents through everyday community life — conversation, meals, games, outings — and help facilitate house meetings and shared discussions
Help organize community celebrations and seasonal activities, encourage participation in the wider neighbourhood, and maintain relationships with former residents, neighbours, and community partners
Qualifications
Strong communication, a joyful and authentic presence, and flexibility and adaptability amid changing needs
Initiative and follow-through, a problem-solving mindset, and a gift for building community
Curiosity and openness, and an appreciation for diverse identities and perspectives on the team
Details
Approximately 5–10 hours per week supporting residents and the community; about 10 hours per month are for community life, with the rest for practical support like maintenance, safety, and emergency preparedness
Compensation has two parts: (1) as a Superintendent, free housing (a taxable benefit valued at $300–$750/month per CRA rules); and )(2) as a Community Animator, pay for 10 hours per month at minimum wage
Accommodation is in one of Romero House's five homes (single, couple, or shared); a six-month discernment period precedes a requested one-year commitment
Romero House is rooted in Catholic social teaching and welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds, or none; members need to be open to and supportive of the community's faith and spirituality
